But kids are funny and the love gun comment sounds exactly like something my son would say. Thanks for the post.Kelliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00847883972920391799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-38547917116804546132009-08-27T22:41:37.783-07:002009-08-27T22:41:37.783-07:00Nice post. And timely for us, too, because superheroes and gunplay are a big part of my 3.5 year old's imaginary world right now.

I don't so much have a problem with the "bang bang, you're dead" side of gun play, it's the graphic violence that seeps into kids' language at such a young age. For example, my son, at just shy of 3 years, came home from preschool one day and told his then 3-week-old baby brother, "I'm gonna get a sharp knife and cut you into pieces." I'm still a little shaken by this statement, even writing it now. Mostly because it made me want to hunt down the guy (and it was a guy, I'm sure of it) who planted those words in his kid's head, who then planted them in MY KID'S head, and, well, rip that guy's head off. But, thankfully, all I could do was talk to my kid about what he said, what it meant, and how even if he was just pretending, I could not let him hurt, or talk about hurting, his baby brother like that. It was just too scary. I guess figuring out where the boundaries of this (or any) kind of "exploration" are can get a little confusing at times, especially for those of us still tying ourselves up in knots over this issue.dv.x.3https://www.blogger.com/profile/17097937663389205624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-41552760905332991652009-08-27T14:50:35.416-07:002009-08-27T14:50:35.416-07:00I don't have time for something pithy but this...I don't have time for something pithy but this post made me laugh out loud - my husband too. Very timely as we're trying to decide where the heck we stand with our gun rules, etc. at home and how to deal with other fam's rules that may differ (if we ever figure out what ours may be). Love the blog. Love shooter :) that one will stick in the lexicon.Monkey's Mamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01437699085199871699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-91615039164626804222009-08-27T14:33:54.720-07:002009-08-27T14:33:54.720-07:00Great post, great perspective.Great post, great perspective.katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08024345906273810543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-11377117863164650992009-08-27T06:33:55.526-07:002009-08-27T06:33:55.526-07:00new superman?? :)new superman?? :)jhonson bloghttp://jhonsonblog.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-47894275733755864012009-08-26T20:00:35.905-07:002009-08-26T20:00:35.905-07:00Great post! However, awhile ago some of our second graders took up the game "shark" on the playground. Shark was fine until they started biting each other on the butt. Then shark was banned by the adults too.
Kids are so much fun to watch because they don't "know" what we know yet. Their innocence is fantastic.
This post had me nodding and laughing.Pumpkin Delight (Kimberly)https://www.blogger.com/profile/15754292671421221960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-81071178824911753392009-08-26T16:23:23.280-07:002009-08-26T16:23:23.280-07:00Interesting topic. I've grown up without guns (but with violence) and will raise my children without guns and without violence (as much as I can).Eternal Lizdomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12436844959718198383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-48442457715867622322009-08-26T14:56:01.835-07:002009-08-26T14:56:01.835-07:00Great post. They are part of their every day lives and need to know about them.

We talk about the fact that using guns can hurt people; cop dads come in and talk about how important it is that they know guns are dangerous and you should NEVER shoot at people (some people use guns to hunt; some use them to shoot at targets-there's a whole olympic sport on that one; etc...).

With that in mind, I reminded two boys who were playing with guns that we don't shoot people (they were shooting at each other). One turned to me and said, "Miss Jenni, he's not a people. He is a tiger and he is attacking the city. I'm hunting him."

Can't win, huh?

Do I like guns? Not really. But they are a part of these children's lives and they have to be able to have a safe place to explore them and know the rules.

However, in your school it seems apparent that those children don't have the same needs as these. If a child wanted to make a no gun rule I would welcome it; love that!Jennihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-18800447339172673302009-08-26T13:17:36.198-07:002009-08-26T13:17:36.198-07:00Love shooter?
