Looking forward to part 3.Pumpkin Delight (Kimberly)https://www.blogger.com/profile/15754292671421221960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-49018001824868221152010-01-02T19:44:47.995-08:002010-01-02T19:44:47.995-08:00I went back and read yesterday's post too. Th...I went back and read yesterday's post too. This is an interesting topic. I don't have any of the answers and I am not a teacher. As a parent, I can assure you that I have 5 highly intelligent children who all test very differently and all perform at different levels in their school work with no one being any smarter than than other. School can't always determine or show intelligence.
At the same time, I see students in our local district being pushed through grades unable to read/write/do basic math for the grade, but are moved along to become someone else's problem.

I do believe that there needs to be a standard to show a comprehension level before being promoted to the next grade. It does a child no favor to push them ahead before they have mastered what they are currently learning. However, I don't think that tests can always show what a child has learned.

I have known many wonderful teachers and many awful ones as a student and as a parent. In our district I know of teachers who went into the profession and higher education just for the salaries (going for their masters before ever spending 1 day as a teacher just because the automatic pay increase and summers off - most teachers don't do this). There is a 2nd grade teacher (who is lousy) in our local school, making 100+K due to yrs and her degrees working across the hall from a phenomenal 1st yr. teacher making <30K whose contract is not being renewed because of disagreeing with the principal at a staff meeting.

I like to think that this is not the norm, but seems all to common in this area.

Like I said, I don't have the answers, but I sure would like some.

Sorry for leaving a book in your comments.WeaselMommahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01695797746467444304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15932919.post-16261071062229029912010-01-02T17:17:59.110-08:002010-01-02T17:17:59.110-08:00Hi Teacher Tom!
